9:30-10:30
Remembering to Forget: Assessing B.C. Ministry of Finance’s Readiness for GDPR-Style Data Erasure
This talk explores the feasibility of implementing a data erasure policy – inspired by the European Union’s “Right to be Forgotten” – within the Ministry of Finance. Drawing on a mixed-methods research approach, this presentation will examine the Ministry’s current data management landscape and delve into the numerous considerations and challenges the Ministry might face in aligning with modern data privacy principles.
Speaker: Jen Peters
Ministry Information Management Officer at the B.C. Ministry of Finance, supports the management of key information resources and collaborates on information management initiatives. An active ARMA Vancouver Island member, she is currently completing her Master of Information Management at Dalhousie University, where her research has centered on data erasure preparedness and privacy compliance in government.
10:45-11:45
An Update on the FIPA Research Project
Spencer will deliver an update on the Freedom of Information and Privacy Association’s (FIPA) research project into the implementation of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy (FOIPPA) and Information Management Act (IMA). The study, which takes place at the intersection of political science and science and technology studies, is currently in the analysis phase and examines how freedom of information and records management work is coordinated through rules (e.g. policies, procedures, etc.) and guidance (presentations, users manuals, etc.) — drawing on a dataset of thousands of documents obtained using FOI requests directed all 66 public authorities subject to both FOIPPA and IMA. Spencer will begin the conversation with a discussion of what it means, politically and administratively, to manage and disclose inscriptions and how starting there may give us new ideas about the importance of information in public bureaucracies, and how that activity can be better controlled according to two of the laws that purport to do so.
Speaker: Spencer Izen
Spencer Izen is the Research Coordinator for the B.C. Freedom of Information and Privacy Association and a student in the Department of Political Science and School of Information at the University of British Columbia. His research focusses on the intersections between public administration and science and technology studies and is aimed at designing a more substantively just practice of the state, bureaucratically and informationally. He has previously held research positions at UBC, McGill, and New York University researching a range of subjects, including misinformation and the political economy of hyperlinks. He is also affiliated with the Centre for Information, Technology and Public Life at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; the Secrecy, Power, and Ignorance Research Network at the University of Bristol; and the Centre for Science, Knowledge and Policy at the University of Edinburgh.

Digital Transformation and AI Risk Management
Generative AI systems like Generative Pre-trained Transformers (GPTs) present revolutionary opportunities across industries, from automating workflows to enhancing decision-making processes. However, with a robust Information Governance (IG) program, organizations can avoid significant risks: data inaccuracies, compliance violations, intellectual property leaks, and legal penalties. This presentation emphasizes the foundational role of IG in AI deployment and explores integration requirements, governance maturity, and risk mitigation strategies to ensure AI drives measurable value.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the Importance of Information Governance (IG) for AI Deployment: Learn how robust IG frameworks mitigate risks suchs as compliance violations, data inaccuracies, and cybersecurity threats, ensuring safe and effective AI implementation.
  • Learn about Key IG Policies and Integration Strategies: Explore essential governance policies, including data retention, metadata management, and access controls, while understanding the integration of AI into enterprise systems like ERP and CRM to optimize performance and compliance.
  • Address Ethical Considerations in AI Deployment: Gain insights into balancing privacy, compliance, and intellectual property risks to deploy AI responsibly and achieve trustworthy outcomes.
Speaker: Richard Freeman – Ricoh
Richard thrives on fixing broken processes using game-changing techniques and technology. He has been helping teams with strategic information management programs that deliver proven results for over 30 years.
