About ARMA VI
We are an award-winning chapter of ARMA International. Our members include records and information managers, privacy administrators, knowledge management specialists, MIS professionals, imaging specialists, archivists, hospital administrators, legal administrators, librarians, and educators.
Our History
2003
ARMA VI Formed
December 9, 2003: ARMA Vancouver Island was officially formed as the 177th chapter of ARMA International. Initially there were 18 members.
2004
First Event & Vital Business
ARMA VI’s first event, a presentation on the Patriot Act, drew a large crowd and earned much needed cash. Other vital tasks were accomplished this year — essential, but unglamorous activities such as establishing bylaws, incorporation, and bank accounts. The opening bank balance was $350 transferred from the Vancouver chapter for memberships.
2005
More Events, New Relationships
In the second full year, ARMA VI delivered two events (including our first one-day conference) and worked on partnership building. Valuable partnerships with ARMA Vancouver and the Archives Association of British Columbia (AABC) will allow us to provide more quality events to our members.
2006
A Challenging Year
2006/07 was a tough year. The year started with a diverse board of 9, but we lost one person every couple of months. Despite this challenge, the group still managed to present two luncheons with speakers — the Legal Implications of RIM and Current Issues in Government Information Management: A Cross-Canada Update .
2007
Collaboration with other Associations
By Spring 2007 the board was back up to 6 members. This year we presented our first vendor-sponsored event, a one-day
conference on Electronic Records Implementation . The event featured diverse speakers, including a representative from the
Canadian Health Information Management Association (CHIMA). We also began planning our first joint event.
2008
Joint Conference
By 2008 ARMA VI had grown to 25 members. This year featured a two-day joint conference with AABC Future Evidence, Past Record. As well as presenting sessions on a wide range of topics, the conference featured an engaging keynote by the Provincial Archivist and reception at Government House. This busy year concluded with a one-day session on RIM Basics and our first joint planning session with ARMA Vancouver.
2009
Joint The Bid for National
After presenting a formal bid and a raucous informal skit, ARMA VI won the bid to host the 2012 ARMA Canada Conference in collaboration with ARMA Vancouver. As ARMA’s 2nd smallest chapter, help would be needed to take on the obligations of host! This year we were also busy planning our first joint event with ARMA Vancouver & ARMA Calgary.
2010
New Events, New Locations
In 2010 we delivered our first events outside Victoria — a one-day conference in Nanaimo, and a two-day event in Kelowna co-presented with ARMA Vancouver & Calgary chapters. The joint event, Whining about Records, proved to be an excellent learning, networking, and revenue-generating opportunity.
2011
Western Region Summit
The first Western Region Chapter Summit was held in Kelowna October 2011. Leaders from Vancouver Island, Vancouver, and Calgary met to discuss common issues and concerns, future events, and to network. Throughout the year, planning was
underway for the 2012 national conference.
2012
ARMA Canada Conference
Hosting the national conference in June was the highlight of 2012, and having the conference in Nanaimo allowed more VI members to attend a national conference. Beyond the conference, we explored new ways to connect with members, including introducing the ability for members outside Victoria to attend board meetings via Skype. We also further developed our website and did such a good job, we received the Website of the Year award at the ARMA International Conference.
2013
10th Anniversary Milestone
As we reach our 10th anniversary, ARMA VI has about 40 members, with almost 1/3 actively dedicating time to board activities. Members all over Vancouver Island can connect via our website, board meetings, LinkedIn, Twitter, and at ARMA events. We are featured in a local business publication. Educational programming is scheduled throughout the year, including a special 10th anniversary event.
